This Indenture made this 17th. day of December in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand Eight hundred and twenty Eight between Jonathan Lankford and Samuel Turner of the one part. and Benja= min Griffin and Eley Joyner Trustees for the Baptist Church at Black Creek and their successors which the said Church may appoint from time to time of the other part. all of the county of Southampton & State of Virginia Witnesseth that the said Jonathan Lankford and Samuel Turner for and in Consideration of the real love that we bear toward true and vital religion do give and grant unto the Said Benjamin Griffin and Eley Joyner as Trustees aforesaid and by these presents do give and grant unto the Said Benjamin Griffin and Eley Joyner as Trustees for the benefit of the Baptist Church at Black Creek in the County aforesaid and their successors. whom the said Church may from time to time appoint forever One certain peice or parcel of Land and premises for the use of the said Church and no other as aforesaid Containing by a late survey four acres. be the same More or less and bounded as follows to Wit Be= ginning at a small red oak a corner of the poor house standing near the Edge of a small branch, thence S 80, W 13 poles to another small red oak a corner of Said poor house Land, thence S. 26° E 59 pole to a pine a corner in James Jones line on the side of the road. thence. along said road N 50. E 13 pole to a small red oak a corner in James Jones' line, thence N 26. W 50 pole to the first station together with all and SIngular the houses. out houses edifices buildings. with all the privileges and appurtanan= ces. thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining to the same or any part or parcel thereof. for the only proper use and behoof of the Church aforesaid as before expressed unto the said Benjamin Griffin and Eley Joyner and their successors. as aforesaid and the said Jonathan Lankford. & Samuel Turner. for themselves their heirs and assigns' doth by these presents covenant and grant to and with the Said Benjamin Griffin and Eley Joyner as Trustees aforesaid the aforesaid tract or parcel of Land the right and title of which as far as. vested in us or our heirs Ex'ors & adm'. we do warrant and forever defend by these presents. (Order Book 1816-19, p. 65) He wed William WILLS & Mrs. Elizabeth TURNER the next day. Southampton Co. M.Reg. 1750-1853, p. 251 (et al.) LANKFORD announced in Dec 1825 that he had come to believe slavery was unjust. After months of controversy, prominent laymen - led by Carr BOWERS - voted in Sep 1826 that LANKFORD be removed from the church roster. Daniel W. Crofts.
