All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Southampton County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Land Records John MERCER & wife Nancy (DOYAL) MERCER to William LAWRENCE, deed of bargain & sale, 52 acres, 18 Nov 1837 (15 Jan 1838) [margin note] Mercer & wife to Lawrence Examd. & This Indenture made this eighteenth day of November one thousand eight hundred and thirty seven between John Mercer and Nancy Mercer his Wife of the one part and William Lawrence of the other part Witnesseth that the said John Mercer and Nancy Mercer his Wife in consideration of the sum of one hundred and twenty five dollars lawful money to them in hand paid by the said William Lawrence at or before the ensealing and delivery of these presents (the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged) have bargain and sold, and by these presents do and each of them doth bargain and sell unto the said William Lawrence his heirs and assigns a certain tract or parcel of Land ly= ing and being in the County of Southampton and containing by estimation fifty two acres be the same more or less, and bounded, as follows, Viz., on the South by William Lawrence's Crumpler Tract, on the north and north west by West Tines' land on the East by Arr_ton Britts, together with all its appertenances whatsoever to the said William Lawrence, to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with the tenements, hereditaments and all and Singular the premises herein before men- [page break] [p.] 185. tioned or intended to be bargained and sold and every part and parcel thereof, with every or each of their rights, members and appurtenances unto the said William Lawrence his heirs and assigns forever (to and for the purpose [underlined] and behoof of him only, the said William Lawrence his heirs and assigns forever. And the said John Mercer and Nancy Mercer his Wife for themselves and their Heirs the said tract or parcel of land with all and singular the premises and appurtenances before mentioned unto the said William Lawrence his heir & Assigns forever, free from the claim or claims of them the said John Mercer and Nancy Mercer his Wife or either of them or of ei- ther of their heirs and assigns and all and every person or persons whatsoever, shall and will and do warrant and will forever defend by these presents. In Witness whereof the said John Mercer and Nancy Mercer, his Wife, have hereunto set their hands and af- fixed their seals Signed sealed and delivered} John Mercer ĪsealĪ in presence of } Nancy Mercer ĪsealĪ James Clayton Jno. Boykin James Jones Southampton County (of Virginia) to wit We James Clayton and Justices of the peace in Southampton County aforesaid, in the state of Virginia, do hereby Certify that Nancy Mercer the wife of John Mercer parties to a certain deed bearing date on the eighteenth of November eighteen hundred and thirty-seven, and hereunto annexed, personally appeared before us in our County afore- said and being examined by us privily and apart from her husband and having the deed aforesaid explained to her, she the said Nancy Mercer acknowledged the same to be her act and deed, and the same that she had willingly signed, sealed and delivered the same and that she wish not to retract it. This Indenture was acknowledged by John Mercer a party thereto to be his act and deed, and, with the Certificate annexed of the privy examination and acknowledgement of his Wife ordered to be recorded.
