All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Southampton County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Land Records Edward BRITT, patent, 100 acres, 10 Jul 1745 [margin note] Edward Britt 100 Acres George the second ________________ by the Grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith &c To all to whom these Presents shall come Greeting Know ye for divers good Causes and Considerations but more especially for and in Consideration of the Sum of Ten shillings of good and Lawful Money for our use paid to our Receiver General of our Revenues in this our Colony and Dominion of Virginia We have Given Granted and Confirmed and by these Presents for us our Heirs and Successors do Give Grant and Confirm unto Edward Britt one ~ Certain Tract or Parcel of Land containing One hundred Acres lying and being in the County of Isle of Wight on the South Side of the Main black Water Swamp and bounded as followeth, to wit, Beginning at a Pine on the South Side of Tarapin branch a Corner of the said Britts old Land Thence North eighty five Degrees West Sixty two Poles to a Red Oak Then North One hundred and four Poles to a Pine Then North ~ fifty five Degrees East One hundred and five Poles to two Spanish Oaks Then South twenty five Degrees East twenty four Poles to a White Oak Thence South twenty eight Degrees East twenty three Poles to a Red Oak a Corner of John Jackson's Land Thence by the said Jackson's line South fifty five Degrees East fifty three Poles to a White Oak Sapling Then South three Degrees East thirty four Poles to a Pine a Corner of the said Edward Britt's Land aforesaid Thence by the said Britt's line South fifty five Degrees West one hundred and ten Poles to the beginning With all Woods Underwoods Swamps Marshes Low Grounds Meadows Feedings and his due share of all Veins Mines and Quarries as well discovered as not discovered within the Bounds aforesaid and being part of the said Quantity of One hundred Acres of Land and the Rivers Waters and Water Courses therein contained together with the Priviledges of Hunting Hawking Fishing Fowling and all other Profits Commodities and Hereditaments whatsoever to the Same or any part thereof belonging or in any wise appertaining To Have hold Possess and Enjoy the said Tract or Parcel of Land and all other the before Granted Premises and every part thereof with their and every of their Appurtenances unto the said Edward Britt and to his Heirs and Assigns for ever To the only use and behoof of him the said Edward Britt his Heirs and Assigns for ever To be held of us our Heirs and Successors as of our Mannor of East Greenwich in the County of Kent in free and Common Soccage and not in Capite or by Knights Service Yielding and Paying unto us our Heirs and Successors for every Fifty Acres of Land and so Proportionally for a Lesser or Greater Quantity [page break] [p.] 300/ than Fifty Acres the Fee Rent of One shilling Yearly to be paid upon the Feast of Saint Michael the Arch Angel and also Cultivating and Improving three Acres part of every Fifty of the Tract abovementioned within three Years after the Date of these Presents Provided always that if three Years of the said Fee Rent shall at any Time be in Arrear and Unpaid or if the said Edward Britt his Heirs or Assigns do not within the Space of Three Years next coming after the Date of these Presents Cultivate and Improve three Acres part of every Fifty of the Tract abovementioned Then the Estate hereby granted shall Cease and be Utterly Determined and thereafter it shall and may be lawful to and for us our Heirs and Successors to grant the Same Lands and Premises with the Appurtenances unto Such other Person or Persons as we our Heirs and Successors shall think fit In Witness whereof we have Caused these our Letters Patent to be made Witness our Trusty and Welbeloved William Gooch Esq. our Lieutenant Governor and Commander in Chief of our said Colony and Dominion at Williamsburgh under the Seal of our said Colony the Tenth Day of July One thousand Seven hundred and forty five In the Nineteenth Year of our Reign William Gooch [margin note] Ex:d Virginia State Land Office Patents No. 22 (1743-1745), pp. 299-300 The Library of Virginia (LVA), Richmond, VA, Land Office Microfilm Reel 20 images online at the LVA's Virginia Memory website (Digital Collections): http://www.virginiamemory.com/ "Britts old Land" refers his 170-acre tract of New Land, lying on both sides of Tarapin Branch [Swamp], patented 24 Mar 1725; file at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/deeds/12pb450a.txt The reference apparently is not to modern Terrapin Swamp - the northernmost in the county - but rather, to Hickaneck Swamp - the next to the south. While these patents are given as being in Isle of Wight Co., they lie in that portion from which Southampton Co. was formed in 1749.
