All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Southampton County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Deeds Elijah JOYNER and wife Martha "Patsey" (JOYNER) to Matthew DRAKE, deed of bargain & sale, 80 acres, 18 May 1836 (20 Jun 1836) [margin notes obscurred in BFA image] This Indenture made this 20. day of June one thousand eight hundred and thir= ty six between Elijah Joiner & Patsey his Wife of the County of Southampton and State of Virginia of the one part and Matthew Drake of the County and State aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said Elijah Joiner and Patsey his Wife for and in consideration of the just and full Sum of three hundred and fifty dollars current money of Virginia in hand paid by the sd. Matthew Drake the recept [sic] of Which is hereby acknowledged and the said Elijah Joiner & Patsey his Wife. have given, granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents do give, grant, bargain and sell unto the said Matthew Drake and to his heirs and assigns forever, all that tract or parcel of Land now joining him, the said Drake, called the Oberry Land the same tract or parcel of Land which Elisha Lewis bought of Alfred Oberry and yound [sic; young] Henry Oberry and willed them by ther [error underlined] father old Henry Oberry containing by estimation eighty acres be the same more or less & bounded by the known and reputed Bounds, beginning at white Oak a corner of Matthew Drake and James Scott's Bunn Land, thence a= long Drake's line a west course to Matthew Joiners line thence along Joiners line same course to Nathaniel Crenshaws Land a Corner, in a small Pranch [sic; Branch] thence alond [sic; along] Crenshaw's line nearly a South course to Elijah Joyner Joiner's [error underlined] Brock land thence along said Land & same Course to the Corner tree of the Oberry, Brock & Lewis land thence an east course to a Black Jack a corner in James Scotts Bunn Land thence along Scotts line, nearly a North course to the beginning: Together with all Houses, Edifices, buildings, yards, orchards, ways water and wa= ter courses whatsoever belonging or in any wise appertaining; to have and to [hold] the said Land to him the said Matthew to him and to his heirs forever, and the said Elijah Join_ [error] and Pat= sey his Wife for themselves and their hers [error underlined] doth warrant and forever defend by these presents _any person or persons claiming or demnding the same or any part thereof. In Witness the sd. Elijah Joiner and Patsey his Wife hath hereunto set their hands, and affixed their seals this day and yearear [sic] first above written. Sebrell Justices of the peace for the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia do hereby certify that Patsey Joiner the Wife of Elijah Joiner parties to the foregoing Indenture bearing date the 20. day of June 1836 personally appeared before us in our aforesaid County and being Examined privily by us after said deed was fully explained to her, privily and apart from her husband, acknowledged the same to be her act & deed & declared that she had willingly signed, sealed and delivered the same and that she wished not to retract it.
