LAWRENCE to William W. WRIGHT, for John B. LAWRENCE, deed of trust, 200 acres & interest in slaves, 27 Jul 1840 (12 Aug 1842) [margin note] Lawrence to Lawrence's trustee Examd. Delivered to Wm. W. Wright August 29th 1843. This Indenture made the 27th day of July in the year of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and forty between Mills E. Lawrence of the first part Wm. W. Wright of the second part and John B. Lawrence all of the County of Isle of wight on the third part: Whereas the said Mills E. Lawrence is justly indebted unto the said John B. Lawrence in the sum of seventeen hundred and seven dollars and thirty three Cents as by bond bearing date the 22d of March 18[?] and on demand the 15th March 1845 which debt with legal interest thereon the said Mills E. Lawrence is willing and desirous to secure. Now this Indenture Witnesseth that for and in Consideration of the premises and also for the further Consideration of One dollar to the said Mills E. Lawrence in hand paid by the said Wm. W. Wright at and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, he the said Mills E. Lawrence hath given granted bargained sold, aliened enfeoffed released and Confirmed and by these presents doth give grant bargain sell alien enfeoff release and Confirm to the said William W. Wright his heirs and assigns forever a Certain tract or parcels of Land lying and being in the County of Southampton and bounded by the lands of John Urquhart and John Boykin and known as the solomon Britt Plantation and Containing two hundred acres more or less and my Interest in the following negro slaves . Thomas Hardy Jacob Dick Benjamin James Lot Andrew Mason and Sintha and Winney bought of John A. Turner and at present in the possession of William Rochelle of Southampton and also my interest in the negroes bought jointly with William B. Whitehead which was Exum Woodards interest in his Mothers dower- To have and to hold the said tract of Land and interest in negroes unto the said William W. Wright his heirs and assigns forever upon trust. Nevertheless that the said William W. Wright shall as soon as he Conveniently Can after the fifteenth day of March 1845[?] and having advertised the time and place of sale of the said land and negroes by three several advertisements to be posted up at the most public places in the aforesaid County and also by one other advertisement to be posted up at the door of the Courthouse of said County on some one Court day previous to the day of sale then proceed to sell the same to the highest bidder, for ready Money and out of the monies arising from such sale first pay all necessary expences attending the sale and then pay to the said John B. Lawrence or his heirs or assigns the debt aforesaid with legal interest thereon and the balance if any he shall pay to the said Mills E. Lawrence his heirs or assigns on demand. (WEST) BRITT conveyed this tract 16 May 1837 to trustee James B. URQUHART, for the benefit of James C. WEST.
