HARRIS [brackets, line breaks & surname capitalization mine] Southampton Co., VA, Deed Book 25 (1840-1843), pp. 515-16 14 Jan 1843 Robert RAIFORD & wife Mary (LUTER) to Mordecai BRADSHAW Deed of Bargain and Sale [margin notes] RAIFORD & wife To: BRADSHAW Exm.d &c This Indenture made the 14.th day of January in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and forty three, between Robert RAIFORD and Mary his wife of the one part and Mordecai BRADSHAW of the other part, all of the County of Southampton & State of Va. Witnesseth: That the Said Robert RAIFORD and Mary his wife in consideration of the Sum of Eighteen dollars of lawful money of this Commonwealth to them in hand paid by the Said Mordecai BRADSHAW at or before the ensealing & delivery of these presents (the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged) have bargained and Sold and by these presents do and each of them doth bargain and Sell unto the Said Mordecai BRADSHAW his heirs &c a certain parcel of land, containing by estimation ten acres more or less and bounded as follows Viz, Commencing with a pine corner tree, at the road adjoining the land which the Said Mordecai BRADSHAW lately purshased of Johnson RAIFORD running a line of marked trees to another pine corner tree joining the land of Said Mordecai BRADSHAW running from thence a line of marked trees to a dogwood Corner tree at the road, the road being the line to the first named tree above together with all the Singular houses out houses buildings yards gardens, orchards lands, tenements meadows, pastures, feedings commons, woods, ways, waters, water courses priviledges, profits, commodities, advantages hereditaments and appurtenances whatsoever to the Said parcel of land belonging or appertaining or with the Same used and enjoyed or accepted, reputed taken or Known as part parcel or member thereof or as belonging to the Same or any part thereof and the reversions & remainders, yearly and other rents issues & profits thereof & every part and parcel thereof: To have and to hold the Said parcel of land with the tenements hereditaments and all and Singular other the premises herein before mentioned or intended to be bargained and Sold and every part and parcel thereof with every of their rights, members & appurtenances unto the Said Mordecai BRADSHAW his heirs and assigns forever (to and for [page break] [p.] 516 the only proper use and behoof of him the Said Mordecai BRADSHAW his heirs & assigns forever) And the Said Robert RAIFORD & Mary his wife for themselves and their heirs, the Said parcel of land with all and Singular the premises & appurtenances before mentioned unto the Said Mordecai BRADSHAW his heirs and assigns, free from the lawful claim or claims of them the said Robert RAIFORD and Mary his wife or either of them their or either of their heirs and of all and every person or persons whatsoever shall will and do warrant & forever defend by these presents. CLAYTON Phillip RAIFORD Southampton County to wit We Benjamin GRIFFIN and James CLAYTON Justices of the Peace in the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia, do hereby certify that Mary RAIFORD the wife of Robert RAIFORD parties to a certain deed bearing date on the 14.th day of January 1843 and hereunto annexed personally appeared before us in our County aforesaid and being examined by us privily and apart from her husband and having the deed aforesaid fully explained to her She the Said Mary RAIFORD acknowledged the Same to be her act and deed and declared that She had willingly Signed Sealed & delivered the Same and that She wished not to retract it Given under our hands and Seals this 14.th day of Jany 1843.
