GRIFFIN to George D. SPIVEY, deed of bargain & sale, 52 acres, 29 Apr 1848 (15 May 1848) This Indenture Made and entered into this 29th. day of April in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and forty eight between Goodwyn G. Griffin of the one part and George D. Spivey of the other part all of the County of Southampton and State of Virginia Witnesseth that the said Goodwyn G. Griffin who was appointed Special Comr. to sell the Lands of which Wm. Britt died seized for and in Consideration of the sum of eighty five dollars to him in hand paid (or secured to be paid) at or before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the Receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath granted bargained & sold and by these presents doth bargain and sell unto the said George D. Spivey his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of Land lying & being in the County aforesaid Containing by estimation fifty acres More or less adjoining the Lands of Jordan Spivey William Jenkins and other known as the Land of which Wm. Britt died seized" To have and to hold the above granted premises with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining to the same to him and his heirs forever and the said G.G. Griffin for himself his heirs &c unto the said George D. Spivey his heirs Exors. admrs. and assigns doth hereby warrant and defend the right & title to the above Named parcel of land so far as is vested in him as Commsr. free from the claim or claims of all and every person or persons whatsoever In Testimony whereof he the said G.G. LAWRENCE & wife Amanda and William LAWRENCE 22 May 1840. Edwards his guardian ad litem Dft. } This day this cause came to be heard by consent on the bill and answer and was argued by Counsel _ On consideration whereof the Court doth adjudge, order and decree that Goodwin G. Griffin who is hereby appointed a Special Commissioner of this Court after giving reasonable notice of the time and place of Sale by advertisement at two or more public places in the vicinity of the Said land mentioned in the bill, proceed to Sell the Same to the highest bidder, and that he reserve so much in cash as will pay the expenses of this decree, and for the balance of the proceeds of Sale he take two bonds, one for one Sixth of the amount and assigned to Margaret Britt in lieu of her dower, and the other for the remainder of the amount and return it to the Clerks Office for the benefit of Thomas Britt, And report to the Court in order to a final decree _ = [...] OB 1843-49:662,666 At a Court of Monthly Sessions held for the County of Southampton at the Court house thereof on the 18" day of September 1848 [...] Margaret Britt Pltff} against } In Chancery Thomas Britt by L.R.
