BAILEY & wife Mary B. to Allen RAIFORD Deed of Bargain & Sale [margin notes] BAILEY & wife to RAIFORD } Deed Know all men by these presents, that we Henry D. BAILEY and Mary BAILEY of the State of Virginia and County of Southampton for and in consideration of the sum of $36.00 dollars paid us by Allen RAIFORD of the State and County aforementioned the receipt whereof we hereby acknowledge do hereby give, grant, and sell and convey to the said Allen RAIFORD his heirs and assigns, a certain tract or parcel of land in the aforesaid State and County, containing 18 acres more or less lieing [underlined] on Sea Cock Swamp and bounded as follows viz. Commencing at a black gum tree on the south side of aforesaid Swamp, thence a South west ['course'] up to the mouth of a branch runing [underlined] into the aforesaid Swamp, thence up the said branch to a pine a corner tree in the land of said Henry D. BAILEY, thence a northwest course to a read [underlined] oak a corner tree in the line of Thomas S. ROWELL, thence down the said Thomas S. ROWELL line to northeast course to Ben BAILEY's branch, thence down the run of the said branch to the run of Seacock a corner in the said Thomas S. ROWELL land, thence the run of the said swamp to the first named tree: To have and to hold the same unto Allen RAIFORD his heirs assigns to his and their use and behoof forever. And we covenant with the said Allen RAIFORD his heirs and assigns that we are lawfully Seized in see [underlined; 'fee (simple)'] of the premises, that they are free of all incumbrances and that we will warrant and defend the same to the said Allen RAIFORD his heirs and assigns forever against the lawful claims and demands of all persons. HOLMES Justices of the peace for the County of Southampton, do certify that Mary B. the wife of Henry BAILEY whose names are signed to the writing above bearing date on the 23rd. day of October, personally appeared before us in the County aforesaid; and being examined by us privily and apart from her husband and having the writing aforesaid fully explained to her, She, the said Mary B. acknowledged the said writing to be her act and declared that had willingly executed the same and does not wish to retract it.
