     Jonathan BRITT & wife Emma to William T. HERRING [HERRIN], 
        deed of bargain & sale, 26 acres, 9 Mar 1853 (14 May 1853)

This Indenture, made and executed this 9th day of March 1853, in the 
year of our Lord Christ, between Jonathan Britt _ Emma his wife 
and William T. Herring, both of Southampton county  Witnesseth: 
that the said Jonathan Britt for and in consideration of the sum 
of Thirty five dollars current money of Virginia to him in hand 
paid by the said Jonathan Britt & wife Emma, doth_at hereby ack-
nowledge, hath granted, bargained and sold and conveyed and 
by these presents  doth grant, bargain sell unto the said 
William T. Herring his Heirs and assigns one certain track_ 
or parcel of land lying and [being] in the aforesaid county of South-
-ampton , and containg_ by estimation twenty six acres be the same 
more or less  which track_ of land the said Jonathan 
Britt heired from his father            Britt last will 
and testament  which is recorded in the County Court 
of Southampton.  This track_ of land is in           No. 37 
and near the run of Black Water and is Bounded 
on the east by the track_ of land belonging Wm.             
by Arrington Britt, S. E. and Jordan Spivey  N. W.  To 
have and to hold the said track_ of land containg_ twenty 
six acres more or less, with the apertances_ thereunto 
with all houses, out houses thereunto belonging &c to 
him and his heirs forever, to the only proper use 
and behoof of him the said William Herring.  And 
the said Jonathan Britt and Emma his wife for 
themselves their heirs &c. do hereby covenant and 
agree to and with the said W. T. Herring his heirs 
and assigns forever  with  all _ Singular  the privileges 
and appertenances before mentioned unto the said William T. Herring 
his heirs and assigns forever, with  all and Singular the privileges 
and appertinances  before mentioned unto the said William T. Herring his heirs 
and assigns forever free from claim or claims of him the said Jonathan 
Britt & Emma his wife or their heirs &c. and all _ every person or person 
whatsoever claiming shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents 
In Witness .whereof, the said Jonathan Britt and Emma his wife have 
hereunto set their hands and seals, the day and year above written

Southampton County, Towit: 
   We, Wm.H. Summerell and Patrick Doles  Justices of the 
peace, of the County aforesaid  do hereby certify that 
Emma Britt the wife of Jonathan Britt parties to the above 
deed bearing date on the ninth day of March 1853 and 
hereto annexed  personally appeared before us in our county 
aforesaid and being examined by us privily and apart 
from her _her husband and having the said deed fully 
explained to her, she the said Emma Britt acknow-
ledged the same to be her act and deed and _ that she 
had willingly executed the same and that she wishes not 
to retract it.  Given under our hands and seals this 10th 
day of March 1853.

Southampton County.  In the Clerk's office the 14th day of May 1853 
This deed of bargain and Sale from Jonathan Britt & Emma 
his wife  to  Wm.T. Herring, was acknowledged by the said 
Britt and together with the certificate of the privy 
examination and acknowledgment of the said Emma, 
admitted to record.
