(DAUGHTREY) KELLO, & son John G. KELLO to Josephine Frances (DARDEN; Mrs. Henry S.) HOWARD, deed of bargain & sale, Jerusalem, 9 Nov 1869 This Deed made this 9th. day of November in the year 1869, between Samuel Kello, and Mary A.R. Kello, his wife, and John Kello grantors, of the one part and - Josephine F. Howard grantee of the Other, Witnesseth; for and in Consideration of the Sum of Twenty four hundred and Eighty dollars, to Samuel Kello, in hand paid by the said Josephine F. Howard at and before the Sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, or otherwise Secured to be paid; the Said Samuel Kello, Mary A.R. Kello, and John Kello, do grant, bargain and Sell to the said Josephine F. Howard a Certain Lot, and houses on the Same, lying and Situated in the Town of Jerusalem, Southampton County Virginia, Known as the "Hart lots", and lands, and described as follows; beginning on the Northwest Corner adjoining the house Known as the "Mahone house", thence in a direction North East along the line of the Said build= =ing, Kitchen and Smoke house, passing a large Sycamore tree to a Small Sycamore Standing on the line of the fence forming the rear and Eastern boundary of the Said Lot, thence in a direction South=east along the Said fence and in the rear of a line of Stables to an intersection With the division line between the Said Lot and the Rochelle Estate, thence along the line of the Rochelle Estate by the Lot and Garden fence following the Course of the Same out to the Stret and public Square, and thence along the public Square in a Northern direction to the point of beginning _ It being the house and Lot Sold by Wm.W. Briggs as Commissioner Under a Decree of the Circuit Court of Southampton, belong to the Estate of Fielding J. Mahone and bought by Samuel Kello, the quantity of Land and the boundaries of which Can be More fully ascertained by reference to the Said Decree, and the Deeds to Fielding J. Mahone _ And the Said Samuel Kello, for himself and heirs doth warrant the title to the Said Lands genreally to the Said Josephine F. Kello, ĪSealĪ Southampton County, In the Clerk's Office, November the 9th. 1869_ This deed of Bargain & Sale from Samuel Kello and Mary A.R. his wife, and John G. Kello to Josephine F. Howard, was this day acknowledged by the Said Samuel Kello and Mary A.R. his wife and John G. Kello to be their act and Deed, and the Said Mary A.R. Kello appeared before me, in my Office, and being examined by me privily and apart from her husband, and having the Said writing fully explained [page break] [p.] 550 to her, She the Said Mary A.R. acknowledged the Same to be her act, and declared that She had executed it willingly and does not wish to retract it_ Thereupon the Said Deed is admitted to record_ Stamps of the Internal Revenue of the U.S. to the amount of Two dollars & fifty Cents, it being affixed thereto and duly Cancelled_ Teste, Oswin White, CC Southampton Co., VA, Deed Book 30 (1860-70), pp. 549-50 The Library of Virginia (LVA), Richmond, VA, Southampton Microfilm Reel 13 Additional information: Samuel KELLO [III] & wife Mary A.R. (DAUGHTREY) KELLO sold this tract to Bolivar T. HENDERSON, 7 Nov 1859, and HENDERSON conveyed it - along with slaves & personal property - on the same day, in a deed of trust to Andrew J. KELLO, for Samuel's benefit. The deed of trust states that Samuel bought the property at public auction. HENDERSON was declared Insolvent, 16 Jul 1860. (Southampton Co. WB17:195) His widow Rosa J. HENDERSON was granted administration on his estate, 20 Apr 1863. (Southampton Co.
