Lien [margin note] Exam'd and sent by mail to W.m M. BEATON This Agreement entered into this 18.th day of April 1878, between Joseph W. HOLLAND of the first part, and W.m M. BEATON & Co., of the orther [stray "r" underlined] part, witnesseth that whereas, the said Joseph W. HOLLAND is about to engage in the cultivation of the soil and is desirous to obtain supplies during the year 1878, from the said W.m M. BEATON & Co., to the amount of thirty five dollars, and for taking the acknowledgement and for recording this agreement, and the said W.m M. BEATON and & [sic] Co., having agreed to furnish said supplies: Now the said Joseph W. HOLLAND on his part, and in consideration of the above provisions doth hereby grant a lien to the said W.m M. BEATON & Co., upon all the crops of every description growing and to be planted and grown during the year 1878, upon the lands owned by Jos. HOLLAND. For the amount advanced to him this year which has been or was intended to have been expended, and the said Joseph W. HOLLAND binds himself agreeably to law to deliver to the said W. M. BEATON & Co. at Boykins, Va. a sufficient quantity of said crops to pay said debt by or before the first day of December 1878. This Lien is granted under an Act of the General Assembly of Virginia approved- April 2.nd 1873, entitled an act to secure the advances for agricultural purposes. Witness the following signatures. Joseph W. HOLLAND X his mark W.m BEATON & Co. Southampton County, to wit: I, David H. KINDRED, a Justice of the Peace of the County aforesaid, do certify that Joseph W. HOLLAND and W. BOON of the firm of W.M. BEATON & Co., whose names appear to the foregoing instrument of writing bearing date April 18.th 1878, acknowledged the same in my County aforesaid. Given under my hand this 18.th day of April 1878. David H. KINDRED J.P. Southampton County, In the Clerk's Office May 6.th 1878. This Writing or Agreement between Joseph W. HOLLAND to W.m M.
