Cutchin, of the firm of Cutchin, Ellis & Co., was born in Nansemond county, in February, 1846. He received the best educational advatages, and at an early age entered the Confederate army, serving with Pickett's division and being engaged in some of the most hard-fought battles of the war, and was never on the sick list during the whole time. Mr. Cutchin has been engaged in active business since early manhood, and has had success in his undertakings. He was for a number of years a member of the Norfolk Cotton Exchange and later of the board of trade of Chicago. Mr. Cutchin, with Mr. Ellis, established the real estate firm of Cutchin, Ellis & Co. in August, 1889. [an engraving of J.H. CUTCHIN is included with the sketch] J. R. ELLIS J. R. Ellis, of the firm of Cutchin, Ellis & Co., is one of the good-looking real-estate meen of Roanoke, and was born in Southampton county in 1866, where he lived until old enough to leave home, at which time he attended Eastman Business College, graduating in 1887. Mr. Ellis engaged in the mercantile business in Franklin until January 1889, when, impressed with the future of Roanoke, he removed to this city, and with his brother conducted the clothing business for a short while, and in August the firm of Cutchin, Ellis & Co. was established, Mr. Ellis being the junior member.
