The Pennsylvania Visitors - A Happy Time With All - A Curious Mistake - Body Re- Covered - The Southampton Elec- tion &c. (Correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.) May 5, 1883. [...] Judge Barrett, of the County Court, has issued a writ ordering the election of a clerk of the courts for Southampton county to fill the vacancy caused by the death of L. R. Edwards, who filled the office for so many years. The election will take place on the fourth Thursday in this month. In view of the defections from the ranks of the Coalitionists in this county a great deal of interest if felt in the approaching elec- tion, and the Democrats are hopeful of vic- tory. [...] ROBIN ADAIR. "The Richmond (VA) Dispatch," May 6, 1883 (Vol. 63, No. 108), p. 1, col. 5 Additional information: Major Littleton R. EDWARDS (1800-1883) gravestone states he was Clerk of Courts for 48 years. That may not be strictly accurate- Oswin WHITE was Clerk for a time, issuing marriage licenses from May 1869 to Apr 1872 (MB1A:317-MB2:25). EDWARDS, a Brunswick Co. native, is buried in Riverside Cemetery (Episcopal Section, Plot 17), Courtland. Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project, Riverside list (C-15): http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/cemeteries/riverside.txt L.R. EDWARDS issued his last marriage license, to Junius BREWER and Mary Ann TURNER, on 24 Mar 1883- the day before he died. His name was written on the next license, but it was partially erased and overwritten by Deputy Clerk James R. TYLER, who acted as Clerk through June. (Southampton Co. MB5:131-32, 160) J.B. PRINCE won the election, apparently taking office in July. (Southampton Co. MB5:161) Joseph Brown PRINCE (1844-1903) is also buried in the Episcopal Section of Riverside Cemetery (Plot 11).
