Petersburg-Jerusalem Plank Road 


Good News for Pilgrims.-There is to be
a plank road from Petersburg to Jerusalem.
The Express says that the question was set-
tled at Prince George Court House on Thurs-
day, and much excitement prevailed on the
occasion. The Plank Road Company had pe-
titioned the County Court for the use of the
public road for the purposes of their improve-
ment. A hundred and fifty citizens opposed
them. Counsel was heard, but in vain, for
twelve out of sixteen magistrates, voted to
grant the use of the road to the petitioners.--
Where is Jerusalem? Is it near Jericho?--
The road between the two latter places we
shall shun, being mindful of a certain man
who fell among some light fingered financiers,
on that route. But we may some day like to
pass from Petersburg to Jerusalem; or vice
versa. A pilgrimage over a good plank road
would be a trifling affair, especially if we put
no peas in our shoes, a la Lorette.

Additional information: 

Jerusalem was the former name of Courtland, county seat of Southampton. 

The "Jerusalem Plank Road" was the scene of considerable maneuvering and 
   fighting during the Siege of Petersburg, Jun 1864 - Apr 1865. 

VA Hwy. 35 follows much of the route of the Plank Rd. 

The road was a financial failure, ruining many of its investors.
