Jones, was killed by a negro at Newsom's Southampton county. Va. on Monday, in a difficulty which originated from a dispute about some trival [sic; trivial] thing on the Doctor's farm. POLITICS WAXING WARM - THE DISTRICT NOMINATING CONVENTION - EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING - EXTRA APPROPRIATIONS BY THE COUNCIL - SUPPOSED TREASURE-TROVE - NEW WAREHOUSE - FELONIOUS ASSAULT - PURCHASE OF A CHESTERFIELD FARM - THE METEOR. [Correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.] July 10, 1878. The negro Egbert Jones who a few days ago nearly beat to death Dr. S.W. [sic] Jones, of Southampton county, and then fled, has been traced to this city. He was seen here yesterday, but was not known at the time. A reward is offered by the citizens of the county for his arrest. He is represented to be a desperate character, and has other crimes laid to his charge. [...] The meteor mentioned in the Dispatch of this morning was seen here about ten minutes before 3 o'clock yesterday morning. It is described as being of immense size and very brilliant, and the hissing noise caused by its passage through the air was distinctly heard. For several seconds the light from the meteor was bright enough to distinguish the smallest object on the ground. Its course was southeast. Robin Adair. [...] Dr. L.W. JONES, of Southampton Co., reportedly murdered 1 Jul 1878, Newsoms, The first article was obviously mistaken. Dr. L.W. Jones was appointed surveyor of the road between the Sign-post near T.R. Pond's to Langsyne, thence to Jones's Bridge, 19 Aug 1878. He sold personal property to Mrs. Mary Reese, 20 Jan 1879. He was exonerated from a physician license tax for 1878, on 16 Jun 1879, as he had no practiced medicine that year, nor sought a license to do so. Sol. Myrick was appointed surveyor of Jones' portion of the road, 15 Dec 1879, "L.W. Jones having left the County." (Southampton Co.
