RELIEF FOR THE IRISH SUFFERERS - ADDRESS BY A RICHMOND CLERGYMAN - THE RACE AT THE FAIR-GROUNDS WON BY "TOP" - ARRESTED FOR ASSAULTING HIS WIFE - BENEVOLENT MECHANICS ASSOCIATION - MATRIMONIAL - EXPORTS OF TOBACCO, &C, &C. [Correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.] JANUARY 12, 1880. [...] A man named James W. Turner, from Southampton county, was arrested in this city to-day, charged with an assault on his wife, said to have been committed last month. It is reported that the woman was quite badly beaten. After which Turner is alleged to have taken his children - three small ones - and left for Petersburg. He will be sent back to the county to-night to answer the complaint. It is rumored in connection with Turner's departure from Southampton that an elopement with a woman of the county was in contemplation. Court Order Book 1875-81. James W. TURNER does appear twice in that volume - two deeds on the 310-acre Waller tract were recorded. He granted the tract to J.D. PRETLOW in a deed of trust, dated 15 Feb 1878 (recorded 8 Jan 1880), then bought the tract from PRETLOW {as guardian of Wm.H. SUMMERELL} & others, 15 Feb 1880 (admitted 16 Feb 1880).
