Captain W.H. Pretlow, a well-known lawyer of Southampton county, Va., is dead. Rev. J.C. Bailey, one of the oldest Baptist ministers in Southeastern Virginia, died at Hicksford on Monday morning at 3 o'clock of heart-disease. "The (Richmond, VA) Daily Dispatch," Sun., Dec. 25, 1881, p. 2, col. 2 PETERSBURG. SINGULAR AND ALMOST FATAL ACCIDENT - NARROW ESCAPE FROM DEATH - LITIGATION ENDED BY DEATH - REPORTED PASTORAL CHANGE - THE PETERSBURG POST-OFFICE - REVENUE RECEIPTS, EXPORTS, &C. [Correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.] DECEMBER 24, 1881. It not infrequently happens that death puts an end the litigation by removing the litigants. In the case of Oliver, town sergeant of Franklin, in Southampton county, charged with shooting a negro whom he was about to arrest, death has removed the only two witnesses for the Commonwealth. Oliver, it will be remembered, was discharging his duty as an officer, and while thus engaged was struck twice upon the head with a "black-jack" in the hands of the negro whom he was endeavoring to arrest. Oliver, after being struck, shot and mortally wounded his assailant. The only two witnesses of the affray have since died - one a violent death, the other from malaria, and the Commonwealth is thus left without any evidence. The report of the death of Captain W.H. Pretlow, of Southampton county, is unfounded. Captain Pretlow has been ill for several weeks, but is now convalescent. "Alexandria (VA) Gazette," Sun., Jan. 15, 1882 (Vol. 83, No. 24) p. 2, col. 3 VIRGINIA NEWS. [...] Thomas Oliver, the sergeant of the town of Franklin, in Southampton County, who killed a colored man in self defense some weeks ago, whom he attempted to arrest, was discharged by the examining magistrate.
