The dimensions of the pit are about fifty feet by thirty. Traditions about this old pit have been handed down from the time of the war of the Revolution. It is very near a large mill ponds [sic] which often becomes very low in the summer. But the pit never seems to be affected by drought, and it always retains its usual level. One record says that an hundred years ago a drunken man who was driving a team of mules attempted to drive past the pit and, his mules becoming frightened, was precipitated therein, team and man both being drowned. The place has, therefore, the reputation of being haunted, and is somewhat avoided at night.
