The dead: Walter J. Harrell* John A. Livesay Badly maimed - Walter Mountcastle, one leg broken; Thomas Chapman, both legs broken; may die. All of these, except Chapman, are white. George Mountcastle, a brother of Walter, was badly lacerated. The mill plant is owned by the Camp Manufacturing Company, of Franklin. Harrell was the sawyer in charge. There was a ratchet lever on the carriage which conveys the logs to the saw. The men were working on a "steam nigger." The Negro who handled the lever got excited and threw the lever the wrong way. He lost control of the carriage. There was a smash, and a pile of men were rammed between the steam-forced carriage and the bumpers. Some were run-over. The crunching of bones was mingled with yells of agony and dying groans. A portion of the mill plant was flowing with blood. The head of Harrell was nearly severed from his body. The body of Livesay will be taken to Petersburg for burial. Harrell’s funeral will take place at Drewryville. Both leave large families. The injured men were taken to a Norfolk hospital.
