Bradshaw was showing us yesterday a 20_inch section of the butt end of a pitchfork handle which Dr. I.P. Gilbert, veterinary surgeon of Courtland, extracted from the chest of one of Mr. Bradshaw's fine registered Percheron colts on Wednesday of this week. About the day after Christmas Mr. Bradshaw noticed that the colt was badly wounded in the chest and had been constantly doctoring the animal, calling in Dr. Gilbert in the meantime, but neither of them noticed the presence of the pitchfork in the animal's body until it was discovered this week and pulled out, the broken end of the handle being at least four inches within her body. The colt, which is about one and one-half years old, weighing approximately 1,000 pounds, is one of 16 registered Percherons which Mr. Bradshaw bought last year in the Valley of Virginia for breeding purposes. It is almost unbelievable, and a fit subject for Ripley's "Believe It or Not" feature, that the colt could have been so terribly pierced by the pitchfork handle and survived, Mr. Bradshaw and Dr. Gilbert stating that the animal will entirely recover. The pitchfork must have been sticking in the ground at an angle and was run into by the colt as it was racing through the pasture, the handle entering the colt's chest and running up by her fore-shoulder between the ribs and stomach wall. - Franklin, Va., News.
