The first instance of Baptist preaching in the Black Creek neighborhood was in the year 1772, when James Dupree, of whom little is known, appeared on the scene. He was followed by John McGlamre of Raccoon Swamp Church (now Antioch Church in Sussex County) and Davis Barrow of the church in Isle of Wight County (now Mill Swamp). On September 16, 1774, several persons from Black Creek were baptized by Elder Barrow into the fellowship of the Isle of Wight church. This small group, led by Abraham Marshall, asked to meet separately under the supervision of the Isle of Wight church. Twelve years later, on May 27, 1786, the congregation, then numbering 70 members, adopted a covenant and constituted themselves an independent church. The original covenant was an elaborately worded document based on the Confession of Faith of the Baptist Association of 1742, and took up five and one-half closely written pages in the record book started in 1786. This book is preserved in Richmond by the Virginia Baptist Historical Society. Church membership now stands at 375 with the Rev. Sidney W. Cowles serving as pastor. Members and former members, and friends attended the 185th anniversary celebration of the church.
