He had been confined to his bed and in a serious condition for four months. Mr. Applewhite was born and reared in Southampton County and had always lived in the Capron community. He was a member of Capron Methodist Church and active in the Big Brothers’ Bible Class until his health failed. He is survived by a devoted sister, "Miss Mary," who was faithful to him until the end. These two have always lived together and each depended on the other. He was a devoted brother and no sacrifice was too great for his sister. He was honest and upright in his dealings with his fellowman, fair and just in all his business transactions. Surely a Christian gentleman has gone to his reward. Funeral services which were held Thursday afternoon in Capron cemetery in the midst of a large assemblage of friends and distant relatives were conducted by his pastor, the Rev. C.V. Morris, assisted by a former pastor, the Rev. R.H. Marks of Union Level. He was a member of the Courtland Masonic Lodge and Masonic rites were used in the service. The choir, composed of Mrs. S.T. Whitfield and Mrs. C.S. Dickens of Courtland, Crawford Wade of Sebrell, Mrs. H.E. Marks, Miss Doris Felts, W.H. Story and R.B. Vaughan sang two of his favorite songs, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Nearer, My God, to Thee." There were many beautiful floral tributes. Active pallbearers were Claud Bell of Portsmouth, D.D. Barham, V.S. Pittman, L.R. Magee, F.L. Marks and L.N. Felts. Honorary bearers were friends of the family. Benjamin Franklin APPLEWHITE [Jr.], b.
