Mrs. Applewhite was seventy-nine years of age and before her marriage to John Edward Applewhite of this county, who preceded her to the home of the soul fourteen years ago. Was Miss Margaret Louisa Barham of Southampton County. From early life she was a member of Applewhite’s Methodist Church and was a consecrated Christian. This lovely woman had the rare gift of a personality and charm that appealed to children and youth as well as to those of her own age. No one ever paid a visit to her home, however short, but was so cordially received, so delightfully entertained, so closely gripped by the winsome spirit of this gentle lady, that he or she became a new addition to her list of lifelong friends. Mrs. Applewhite was never the lonely person we often find at such an advanced age. She dearly loved music, flowers and books and when other member of her family must be about their daily duties there and the choice and beautiful thoughts of which she had such a rich stone were her constant companions. While death always casts for a time an almost impenetrable gloom, yet the death of this much-loved woman loses some of its sadness in that no sufferings attended her illness, no doubts nor fears accompanied her passing from earth, but calmly resignedly, triumphantly she fell asleep. Interment was made at the family burial place a short distance from Capron August 25. Rev. W.H. Riddick and Rev. E.F. Garner conducted her burial services. She was borne to her last resting place by G.B. Smith, Parley Baker, G.W. Burgess, S.W. Joyner, W.D. Reese, T.W. Story and E.L. Marks. Honorary pallbearers: J.B. Davis, E.E. Rawlings, G.A. Lankford, L.W. McGrath, J.R. Kello, S.T. Kello P.A. Ellis, G.W. Hasty, E.A. Felts and W.D. Reese. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. Three favorite hymns of the deceased, "In That City", "The home of the Soul" and "Will the Circle be Unbroken?" were impressively sung by the Capron M.E. Church choir. The deceased leaves two sons, C.H. Applewhite and Dr. J.N. Applewhite of Capron, a sister, Mrs. Bettie Simmons of Suffolk, several grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Those attending the funeral from a distance were Miss Elizabeth Vincent and John Vincent of Suffolk, Mrs. M.F. Gurley of Portsmouth, Mrs. Cora Parker of Yale, Mrs. J.B. Matthews of Franklin and Mrs. Nettie Totten of Yadkin College, N.C. Margaret Louisa (BARHAM; Mrs. John E.)
