He had been a resident of our town for only a few years but we had learned to know him as a good, quite, Christian gentleman. No one ever had aught to say against him for he gave to none occasion. He had mothering but good will for all with whom he dealt, he always walked the footpath of peace. At the time of his death he was a member of Vincent’s Grove Methodist Church, but until a few years ago he was a consistent and faithful member of Applewhite’s M.E. Church since young manhood. The last few weeks of his life were filled with intense suffering which he bore with great patience and resignation to the Divine will. The funeral on the following day was conducted by Rev. W.H. Riddick, a former pastor of the deceased, and attended by a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends. The body was laid to rest on the site known as the Lewis Marks farm near town, this being a request of the deceased. But while his body is lost to sight his memory and influence will still live on. There were many floral designs from loved ones and friends, the last token of love and appreciation one could render. We extend our deepest heartfelt sympathy to his devoted wife and children. He is survived by his devoted and faithful wife, two daughters, Mrs. S.T. Whitfield and Mrs. B.B. Joyner of Courtland; four sons N.L. and R.J. Applewhite of Washington, R.P. and J.R. Applewhite; two brothers, Dr. J. Applewhite and C.H. Applewhite, and a number of grandchildren. The out-of-town friends and relatives who attended the funeral besides his children and grandchildren were S.T. Whitfield and B.B. Joyner of Courtland, J.H. Hale of Norfolk, and Mrs. M.F. Gurley of Portsmouth. The active pallbearers were L.J. Bain, B.J. Scarboro, T.W. Story, W.P. Gillett, Sr., T.H. Wade and W.J. Cole; honorary W.T. Barham, W.D. Reese, L.W. McGrath, B.F. Applewhite, G.A. Lankford, E.E. Rawlings, A.J. Jenkins, C.F. Spain, E.A. Felts, L.P. Williams, Claud Bell and Darrell Ezelle.
