All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ CLARENCE CONLEY ATKINSON OIL TRUCK DRIVER KILLED BY TRAIN SUFFOLK - April 10 - Clarence Atkinson, 31, of Zuni, employed as a truck driver by the Sinclair Oil Company, was instantly killed at 3:15 p.m. today when struck by a Virginian Railway passenger train at the Pine Street crossing here. The train was en route to Norfolk. Atkinson, a veteran of World War II, is survived by his widow and one child. ****************************************************************************** CLARENCE CONLEY ATKINSON Zuni Man Killed By Train Wd 10th A recently charged veteran and father of one daughter, of Zuni, was killed almost instantly when the oil truck he was driving was struck by the 2:15pm eastbound Virginia passenger train April 10th at the Pine Street Crossing. He was Clarence Atkinson, 30, who was returning to the bulk plant of the Sinclair Refining Co on Pine Street after making a kerosene delivery. Atkinson was discharged from the medical corps of the U.S. Army on Christmas Day, 1945 after being drafted into the service in June 1941 when he left the employ of the local company branch. The son of the late Jake C. Atkinson of Sussex and Mrs. Betty Bailey Atkinson of Ivor, he is also survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha C. Atkinson; his daughter, Lenora Jean; one brother, James Leonard of U.S. Army, one sister, Miss Lucille Atkinson of Petersburg, and nine aunts and uncles. He attended Wakefield High School. According to Chief of Police L.B. Butler, who investigated the accident with Special Investigator H.W. Church, the bell and light signal at the crossing was in operation during the accident. Butler said Atkinson who suffered a broken neck, died about 15 minutes after the wreck. Funeral services were held on Friday at Bethany Church at Zuni and burial was in Tucker Swamp Cemetery in Zuni.
