ATKINS Walter Cleveland Atkins, 71, a resident of Courtland for the past 23 years died at his home Thursday night, April 12, after an illness of a few months. He was the husband of Mrs. Anna Gray Atkins of Courtland and the son of the late W. James* and Mrs. Sallie Gravitt Atkins of Virgilina. He was member of the Baptist church and the Brotherhood of Railway Employees. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ethel G. Holzbach of Richmond and Mrs. Frances G. Bryant of Portsmouth; three sons, William Graham Atkins of Franklin, Walter J. Atkins of Norfolk, and Samuel J. Atkins of South Hill; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren, five brothers, Harvey Atkins and Goochie Atkins of Virgilina, Quintie Atkins of Leaksville, N.C.; Melvin Atkins of Baltimore, Md., and Peeble Atkins of Norfolk, and one sister, Mrs. Pearl Nelson of Virgilina. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Mecklenburg County, by Rev. Arthur Heath Light, pastor, assisted by Rev. Richard, H.L. Vanaman of Franklin. Burial was in the family cemetery at Virgilina. Active pallbearers were Fenton Atkins, William Nelson, Otis Adams, Jesse Curran, William Nunn and Emory Adams.
