Mr. Atkins, a native of Southampton County, was a member of Zuni Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Esther Joyner Atkins; three daughters, Betty A. Hawkins and Dorothy A. Turner, both of Suffolk, and Shelva A. Edwards of Franklin; five sons, William A. Atkins of Richmond, James T. Atkins of Franklin, Edgar A. Atkins of Courtland and George H. Atkiins of Suffolk; two sisters, Sarah A. Kea of Ivor and Lucy A. Britt of Wakefield; 26 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A graveside service was conducted Tuesday in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, by the Rev. Daryl Smith. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield handled arrangements.
