Rudy Potter and the Rev. Edwin C. Thornton Jr. Pallbearers were John W. Wilkes III, W. Robert Wilkes, William R. Atkinson III, Richard D. Atkinson, John M. Atkinson, Andrew A. Bailey Jr. and Mark A. Bailey. A native of Prince Edward County, he had lived in Franklin for the past 56 years. He was the son of William M. and Mrs. Bertie Bondurant Atkinson and the husband of Mrs. Carrie Drake Atkinson. He was the former owner and publisher of the Tidewater News for 46 years before his retirement in 1964. Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters Mrs. Rose A. Wilkes of Raleigh, N.C. and Mrs. Carolyn A. Bailey of Richmond; one son W.R. Atkinson Jr. of Franklin; two sisters Mrs. Virginia Liggan of San Antonio. Tex.; and Mrs. Nellie A. Chapman of Farmville; one brother Aubrey E. Atkinson of Farmville; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
