ALSOP, CHURCH WORKER, DIES SUDDENLY Mrs. Lillian Williams Alsop, former resident of Franklin and prominent worker in the Baptist Church, died suddenly at her residence, 3248 "N" Street, Washington, D.C., on Friday, October 21. Born in Como, N.C., on November 5, 1888, Mrs. Alsop was a daughter of the late William G. and Mrs. Gertrude Taylor Williams of Franklin. She was a graduate of Franklin Female Seminary, Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., and the W.M.U. Training School in Louisville, Ky. After graduating from Meredith College in 1908 she became a member of the faculty of Franklin Female Seminary, teaching the primary grades. She also taught for a while in North Wilkesboro, N.C. While attending the W.M.U. Training School, from which she graduated in 1915, she taught a Sunday school class for two years. At Chowan College, Murfreesboro, N.C., Mrs. Alsop taught Bible and was religious director for two years. From there she went to Norfolk as a Sunday school worker in Freemason Street Baptist Church, serving in that capacity for two years before being called to Richmond to assist Dr. J.J. Wicker, pastor of the Leigh Street Baptist Church. After three years in Richmond she went in 1922 to the Fifth Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., to assist the pastor, Dr. John E. Briggs. She was Dr. Briggs’ assistant for 13 years, retired in 1935 when she married Benjamin B. Alsop of Washington, who died in 1944. Mrs. Alsop united with Temple Baptist Church, Washington, in January, 1945. In March, 1946, she became Church visitor at Temple to assist Dr. Briggs, who had been called to the pastorate four years before. Dr. Melvin W. Crump succeeded Dr. Briggs as pastor at Temple on November 21, 1948, Mrs. Alsop continuing as Church Visitor and assistant to the pastor. On May 11, 1954, shortly before her retirement, Mrs. Alsop was the honor guest at a testimonial dinner given by the members of Temple Baptist Church in appreciation of her labors as Church Visitor. Mrs. Alsop is survived by two sisters, Mrs. R.J. Tucker and Miss Gertrude T. Williams of Franklin; two brothers, M. Wharton Williams of Franklin and Frank C. Williams of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. Funeral services for Mrs. Alsop were conducted at 11 o’clock Monday morning in Temple Baptist Church by Dr. Melvin W. Crump, pastor of the church, assisted by Dr. John E. Briggs, pastor of Briggs Memorial Baptist Church. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C. [sic*]. Among those attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank C. Williams of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; and Mrs. R.J. Tucker, Miss Gertrude Williams, M. Wharton Williams, Billy Bryant Williams, and M. Wharton Williams, Jr., all of Franklin.
