Claiborne Babb died Thursday afternoon while traveling on Berkley Bridge in Norfolk. Babb, 44, may have suffered a heart attack, according to Virginia State Police investigators. According to police, a witness saw Babb slump over the wheel as he drove south across the bridge. Briggs official P.A. Burnett told reporters the Babb vehicle jumped the sidewalk and hit a handrail. "Then the vehicle suddenly started going in reverse," Burnett said. "It ran backward up the bridge and went across four lanes of traffic and stopped after hitting a north bound Volkswagen bus causing $170 in damages." John E. Brown, the VW bus driver, was not injured. Babb was driving alone in a 1971 Mercury.
