Babb was born in Isle of Wight County, Va., September 5, 1856, and passed away at his home near Corinth in Southampton County, March 15, 1920. He was a member of a family of seven children, and at a very early age, they were deprived of a father’s care by death. He, thus being thrown upon his own resources early in life, developed those sterling qualities of character, industry and perseverance, which won for him a place of esteem in the business interests of the county. On December 18, 1885, at "Old Friends Black Creek," he was united in marriage, according to the Friends ceremony, to Hannah C. Brantley. To this union were born eight children, three of whom have already preceeded him to the "Glory Land," two in infancy and the eldest son, J. Stanley Babb, over a year ago. In early manhood he made a public profession of faith in Christ, and soon afterward united with the Friends Church of which communion, he remained a member through his life, being a faithful attendant upon same during the active period of his life. In disposition he was of even temperament, mild and of a kindly spirit, sincere and upright in all his relations with others. He was greatly afflicted in the latter years of his life and during his last sickness was confined to his bed for several weeks. Every effort was made by his family for his recovery, but all in vain, and he passed away quietly to rest, in the assurance of faith. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Livingstone H. and E. McCauley; three daughters, Miss Isla Gertrude, Mrs. G.T. Partridge of Yale, Va., Mrs. H.W. Hines of Boykins, Va.; by two brothers, and three sisters, and a number of nieces and nephews to mourn their loss. In his passing the community suffers an irreparable loss. The funeral services were conducted at the home by his pastor, Rev. A.E. Cloud, assisted by Rev. B.L. Osborne. The active pallbearers were L.H. Brantley, E. Frank Story, Dr. R.L. Raiford, F.P. Pulley, W.G. Raiford, T.L. Bain, John T. Raiford, Pettaway Barrett. Those acting as honorary pallbearers and bearing the beautiful floral designs with which the casket was laden were R.E.L.
