All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ RUTH OWEN BABB RABBIT FEVER TAKES LIFE OF SUFFOLK NURSE Suffolk, Dec. 13.- Miss Ruth Owen Babb, on the staff of the Lakeview Hospital and prominent graduate nurse of this community died this morning at the hospital after an illness of about three weeks of tularefia [sic; tularemia] or "rabbit fever." Miss Babb with friends, assisted in cleaning a rabbit several weeks ago, to to them by friends who had been hunting. [...] Besides her father, Miss Babb is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Gray Herring, of Goldsboro, N.C.; Mrs. James Baburek, of Suffolk, and Mrs. Joseph Pittman, of Waverly; three brothers, Ryland Ashby and Marvin W. Babb, of Washington, and Henry D. Babb, Jr., of Ahoskie; two half brothers, David and Lewis Babb, of Courtland, and several nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the funeral home of I.O. Hill & Co., where it will remain until Wednesday at 10 a.m. when it will be taken to the home of Miss Babb's father in Courtland. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Courtland Baptist Church by Dr. H.J. Goodwin, pastor of the First Baptist Church, of Suffolk; Dr. John G. Truitt, of the Suffolk Christian Church, and the pastor of Courtland Baptist Church. Burial will be in Courtland Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** Miss Ruth O. Babb Suffolk, Dec. 16.-(AP)- Funeral services for Miss Ruth Owen Babb, prominent and popular graduate nurse, who died of tularemia at Lakeview Hospital, were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Courtland Baptist Church by Dr. H.J. Goodwin, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Suffolk, the Rev. Floyd P. Davis and the Rev. Mr. Wilkinson. Burial was in Courtland Cemetery. A quartet from the First Baptist Church of Suffolk sang, "Sweeter as the Days Go By, "Crossing the Bar" and "Have Thine Own Way, Lord." There were scores of handsome floral tributes, many from organizations in which Miss Babb held membership. A pall of red roses and fern covered the casket. Active pallbearers were H.C. Andrews, C.D. Andrews, A.B. Cobb, Wilmer Cobb, M.C. Stribling, Frank Womack, Byron Cutchins. Honorary pallbearers included the doctors of Lakeview Hospital and nurses of the Lakeview Hospital alumni.
