All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ NORFOLK, VA., Nov. 11.- Mr. Asa Biggs and his wife, a young couple formerly of this city, were burned to death last night at their home in Southampton county, near Franklin, by the explosion of a kerosene lamp. Mr. Biggs was about retiring, and was walking across the floor when the lamp exploded, setting fire to his clothes. Mrs. Biggs went to the assistance of her husband, and was fatally burned in attempting to save him. The burning oil set the house on fire. Mrs. Biggs managed to escape from the house, dying shortly afterwards from her injuries, but the body of her husband was consumed with the building. The unfortunate young man was the son of Col. Kader Biggs, of this city, and his wife was Miss Massenburg, of Littleton, N.C.
