Vann, near Franklin. He was the husband of Mrs. Jennie Donovan Bess, and the son of the late Alonzo and Mrs. Clara O. Britt Bess of Hertford County, N.C. He was a retired employee of the Union Bag-Camp Paper Corp. A native of Hertford County, N.C., he had resided in Franklin for the last 12 years. He was a member of the Beaver Dam Baptist Church. Besides his wife and sister, he is survived by two sons, Raymond D. and Julian R. Bess of Franklin; three daughters, Mrs. Pearl B. Reynolds of Norfolk; Mrs. Bernice B. Avrigian of Philadelphia, Pa. and Miss Judy L. Bess of Franklin; one brother, B.C. Bess of Murfreesboro, N.C.; three sisters, Mrs. W.C. Stradley of Franklin; Mrs. Benjamin Rhodes of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. R.E. Holt of San Jose, Calif., and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home Monday at 2:30 p.m., by the Rev. Edwin C. Thornton, pastor of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. Burial was in the family plot near Murfreesboro.* Pallbearers were Willie Tedder, Chester Piersa, Paul Gerald, R.W. McCoy, J.H. Duke and Harold Morris.
