The remains of Captain John S. Bogart will arrive in Portsmouth to-morrow morning from Baltimore, and the interment will take place in the family lot in that city. [...] Captain John H. Bogart. Captain John H. Bogart, of Franklin, Southampton county, who died in Baltimore on Tuesday, was aged 51 years. He was a son of William S. Bogart, a native of New Jersey, who subsequently became Superintendent of Schools at Savannah, Ga. John H. Bogart was born at Portsmouth, Va. He was educated at Princeton and the University of Berne, Switzerland. Returning to the United States, he entered the Confederate service upon the opening of the late war. He served in the army as a private at the age of 18 years in General Mahone's brigade, and was promoted to a captaincy for gallant conduct. After the surrender at Appomattox Captain Bogart located at Franklin, Southampton county, Va., and became superintendent of the Albemarle Steam Navigation Company. Captain Bogart was an ardent Democrat, and for many years wielded a powerful influence in the politics of his section and State. He was a member of the Virginia Legislature from Southampton county for several years and also of the Democratic State Central Committee. He was a delegate from the Second Congressional District of Virginia to the Democratic National Convention in 1884, which nominated Mr. Cleveland as President. Captain Bogart is said never to have been an applicant for public office and declined several nominations or appointments to such positions which he might have received. Captain Bogart was widely and favorably known in Virginia for his courteous manners, his keen interest in Democratic politics, and his devotion to the transportation business placed under his supervision. He married Miss Barrett, of Franklin, who, with one daughter and two sons, survives him.
