All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIAM OSWALD BOGART William Oswald Bogart, 73, a member of one of Franklin’s oldest and most prominent families died at the residence of South Main Street on Tuesday afternoon, April 1, after several years of failing health. Mr. Bogart was born in Franklin on February 20, 1879, and was one of the oldest native-born residents of the oldest native-born residents of the town. He was the son of the late John Henry and Mrs. Mary Barrett Bogart, both of Franklin, and the husband of Mrs. Lydia Owens Bogart, who survives him. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and a former employee of Pretlow Peanut Company. Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Charles P. Holland, Jr., of Suffolk; three grandsons; two nephews, Bogart A. Pretlow and Robert A. Pretlow, Jr., both of Franklin; and a niece, Mrs. R.E. Rutledge of Coral Gables, Fla. A member of the Franklin Killdees of half a century ago, he maintained an interest in sports, especially baseball, until illness confined him to his home. Last rites for Mr. Bogart were conducted at the residence on Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. John M. Gessell, rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, and Rev. Jean A. Vache of Farmville, a former rector. Interment was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The active pallbearers were Dennis L. Brett, Franklin Edwards, Edward F. Gilliam, Thomas C. Holland, Jr., H.B. McLemore, Jr., Junius W. Pulley, Jr., C.C. Vaughan, 3d, and W.M. Weede.
