Accessory to Captain Overby's Murder - A Negro Row - General Mention PETERSBURG, VA., July 8.-[Special.]- [...] News has been received of the death of Mrs. Mary E. Booth at her home in Southampton county. She was the mother of Mrs. Dr. J.E. Moyler, of Petersburg, and stepmother of Mr. P.H. Booth, also of this city. She was twice married, first to Mr. John Owen, of Sussex county, and afterward to Colonel Samuel Booth, of Sussex county. Mary Eliza (TATUM OWEN; Mrs. Samuel) BOOTH, Sussex Co. native, d. "Lottie" Charlotte Carter (STEBBINS) OWEN 28 Feb 1881, in Hanover Co. Middle & maiden name from daughter's gravestone, Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. (Find a Grave Mem. #27554473) John d. 15 Jan 1937, and was buried in Wakefield Cemetery. (Find a Grave Mem. #127134434) His D.Cert. (635 {Richmond #140}) is difficult to read; his mother is transcribed as Mary Eliz. Lathen, b. Sussex Co. She 2m. widower Samuel BOOTH, 22 Dec 1859, in Sussex Co. - Mary E., age 42. Her stepson Patrick Henry BOOTH Sr. (1820-1896) m. Anne Maria H. MAYNARD, 27 Dec 1841, in Surry Co., VA. (FamilySearch.org "Virginia Marriages, 1785-1940," database, citing Surry, Virginia, reference p 189; FHL microfilm 34,097.) They appear in the East Ward of Peterburg in the 1860 Census - P.H., 39, Grocer & Commissn. Merchant; Ann, 40. They have a tall granite obelisk in Blandford Cemetery.
