Tom Butler, one of Franklin’s oldest citizens, died Sunday morning at the home of his brother, Jethro Butler, in Sedley where he and been ill for about six weeks. Mr. Butler was the son of the late James and Mrs. Patsy Butler of this county, being born and reared at the old homestead, near Sedley. He came to Franklin in 1880 and clerked for some years for Captain A.L. Gardner and later for Colonel Edwards. Thirty years ago he purchased the business then conducted by Colonel Edwards and was Franklin’s oldest merchant from the standpoint of continuous service in one business. He was 77 years of age. Mr. Butler was simple and unassuming the manner, of genial disposition and numbered many friends in the town and community. He was a faithful member of the Franklin Baptist Church and led an exemplary life. He is survived by two brothers, Rev. M.W. Butler of Conshohocken, Penn., and Jethro Butler of Sedley, two sisters, Mrs. Richard Barnes of Sebrell and Mrs. I.V. Joyner of Courtland, and by 18 nephews and nieces. Funeral services were conducted by his Pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, Tuesday afternoon in Sedley and interment was made in Rosemont Cemetery there. The body bearers were: Chas. W. Davis, J.H. Joyner and M.R. Joyner of Courtland, J.E. Butler and A.T. Rollings of Sedley and A.G. Barnes of Sebrell.
