Butler was born October 6, 1859, in Southampton County, son of James and Martha* Butler and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.D. Wellons, and Mr. Wellons in Roanoke on January 14, 1947, following a year's illness. After becoming ordained as a minister in the Christian Church he held pastorates in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Virginia, covering a period of more than sixty years. His last charge was at Wakefield, where he was pastor there, at Burton's Grove and Barrett's, for three years until an automobile accident forced his retirement in November, 1945. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. J.D. Wellons, of Roanoke and by one son, Murdock W. Butler, Jr., of Danville, four grandchildren and five great- grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted at Johnson's Grove Church, the church of his childhood, Wednesday by the pastor, Rev. R.M. Kimball, assisted by Dr. I.W. Johnson, Dr. H.S. Hardcastle and Rev. W.B. Oneill. The choir of the Wakefield Church sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide With Me." Pallbearers from the churches he served were: Fenton Branch, Walter Seely, William Bailey, Wallace Brittle, Harry Harris, Floyd Faison, Howard Stephenson and Peyton Gay. Interment was made in Rosemont Cemetery, Sedley. The floral tributes were many and beautiful and we can say with Whittier: "The dear Lord's best interpreters Are humble human souls; The gospel of a life like his Is more than books or scrolls."
