A funeral service for Wallace Council Butler, 61, of Walnut St., Franklin, was held Monday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. in W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Ira D. Hudgins and the Rev. Rudy Potter. Burial was in Southampton Memorial Park. Moose rites were accorded at the grave. Pallbearers were Jack Story, Farrow Lanier, Ryland Rainey, W.L. Wilkerson; Carson Whitley Jr., E. Harrell Whitley, Billy Raiford and R. Brent Vann. Butler died Saturday, Dec. 29 in Southampton Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. A native of Isle of Wight, he was a son of Wallace and Mrs. Estelle Nelms Butler and husband of the late Margaret Whitley Butler. He was a member of Franklin Baptist Church and retired from Union Camp Corp. He was a member of Franklin Moose Lodge #1573, Franklin Hunt Club and an Army veteran of W.W.II. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hare of Tyner, N.C. and Mrs. Bruce K. Griggs of Suffolk; one son, Wallace Everett (Buddy) Butler; two sisters, Mrs. Tommy Phelps of Portsmouth, and Mrs. L.R. Beale of Richmond; and three brothers, Jimmy and Edgar Knight of Suffolk, and Terry Knight of Orlando, Fla. and seven grandchildren.
