BOWDEN "Norfolk (VA) Landmark," Vol. 37, No. 8, Tues., July 4, 1893, p. 1 NORFOLK LOCAL. Death of a Well-Known Lady. Mrs. Henrietta S. Bowden died suddenly of heart failure yesterday afternoon at the residence of Colonel John J. Deyer, in Southampton county, where she was visiting. Although she had been in feeble health for some time, her death was entirely unexpected and a great shock to her family and friends. Mrs. Bowden was the widow of Mr. Henry M Bowden, who was for many years a prominent citizen of Norfolk and at one time the Clerk of the Courts here. She was the mother of the Hon. George E. Bowden and a lady of wide charity and high Christian character. The funeral services will be held at the family lot in Cedar Grove Cemetery, in this city, upon the arrival of the 5:45 Seaboard and Roanoke railroad train this afternoon. ****************************************************************************** "Norfolk (VA) Weekly Landmark," Vol. 37, No. 10, Wed., July 5, 1893, p. 4 DEATHS. Bowden, mother of Hon. George E. Bowden, took place in Cedar Grove Cemetery yesterday afternoon and was conducted by Rev. T.G. Jones. The deceased was a most estimable lady, the widow of the late Henry M. Bowden, of Norfolk. She died suddenly of heart failure on Monday last at the home of Col. John J. Deyer, in Southampton county, Va., where she was visiting. The pall-bearers were as follows: Col. Wm. Lamb, Major R.G. Banks, F.L. Slade, Thos. H. Hodges, W.G. Webb, S.S. Nottingham, A.H. The funeral services of Mrs. Henrietta S. Bowden, the mother of the Hon. George E. Bowden, were held in Cedar Grove Cemetery Tuesday afternoon at 6:30 o'clock, after the arrival of the Seaboard and Roanoke train. The Rev. Dr. T.G. Jones conducted the services in a most impressive manner, after which the remains were interred in the family lot in that cemetery. The following gentlemen as pall bearers escorted the body from the train to its last resting place: Colonel William Lamb, Major R.G. Banks, F.L. Slade, Thomas H. Hodges, W.G. Webb, S.S. Nottingham, A.H. Lindsay and H.B. Her daughter "Dora" Eudora J. STUBBLEFIELD & Wyndham H. LEAVITT m. 16 Oct 1866 in Norfolk; both were b. circa 1841 in Gloucester Co.; Dora's father is given as Edward. Apparently Dora d. in Mar 1868. Henrietta, 26, & E.J. STUBBLEFIELD, 7, appear in the 1850 Census in Gloucester Co. with Ann L. STEPHENS, 60 - likely Henrietta's mother. The 1860 Census - City of Williamsburg, James City Co. p. 18th; dwelling & family #159 09. Henry M. BOWDEN, 43, Farmer, $5000 real/$7500 personal estate, b. WmsBurg 10. Henryetta BOWDEN, 39, b. Gloucester Co. 11. Eudora J. STUBBLEFIELD, 19, $4000 personal estate, b. Gloucester Co. 12. Allice D. BOWDEN, 15, b. WmsBurg, attended school 13. Geo: E. BOWDEN, 7, b. WmsBurg 14. Susan MAYER, 47, b. Norfolk, Va. Henry & Henrietta 2m. circa 1851. Their son George Edwin BOWDEN was b. 6 Jul 1852 in Williamsburg & d. 22 Jan 1908 in Norfolk. Licensed as an attorney, he served as the collector of customs for the Port of Norfolk. He was elected to Congress as a Republican for two terms. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk.
