BOWDEN AGED CONFEDERATE VETERAN DIES AT IVOR John Thomas Bowden, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.D. Hundley in Ivor Friday, February 14, in the 86th year of his age. He was born Oct. 10, 1844, in the Ivor community [sic*], and had lived in town for the past 15 years, moving here from Smithfield. He married Alexina Boothe in September, 1866, who died in 1917. He was a member of Ivor Baptist Church. He first joined Mill Swamp Baptist Church at the age of 28, being a member at Smithfield about 25 years. Two of his sons were Baptist preachers, one of whom is pastor of Pocahontas Baptist Church and another the pastor of a Baptist Church at Greenville, S.C. He was one of the few surviving Confederate soldiers and his casket was draped with the Confederate flag. He was a member of Mahone’s Brigade, 16th Virginia Regiment, fighting under Gen. R.E. Lee the entire four years of the war, being wounded at Spotsylvania C.H., and was imprisoned for six months. During his military service he was converted to Christ and he and some of his comrades built a log building in which they used to hold religious services. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. J.O. Cofer, Richmond; Mrs. Evy O. Burt, Dendron, and Mrs. Annie D. Hundley, Ivor, and three sons, Rev. R.H. Bowden, Pocahontas; Rev. J.T. Bowden, Greenville, S.C., and E.B. Bowden, Red Hill, Albemarle County, all of whom were present at the time of his death. There are 26 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. The funeral services were held from the Ivor Baptist Church Sunday afternoon, February 16, and interment was in the Millfield Church cemetery. The services were conducted by his Pastor, Rev. W.M. Hall, assisted by Rev. Mr. Pleasants of Dendron. The body bearers were Grover, Burrell, John and Leonard Boothe, Henley and Luther Presson, Henry Bowden and J. Bowden Hundley. The honorary pallbearers were: T.A. Saunders, G.C. Niblett, W.C. Rawls, W.T. Bain, R.E. Stewart, E.H. Stephenson, A.B. Clayton, T.O. Camp, Billy Pittman, L.T. Saunders, W.E. Mayton, H.S. Boone, L.C. Pulley and W.P. Johnson.
