All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ALICE CLARA BELL MISS ALICE BELL, BELOVED TEACHER, PASSES, AGED 81 Miss Alice Clara Bell, 81, died at the home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. J.N. Bell, High Street Friday night, December 18. "Miss Alice," as she was known to the hundreds of people to whom she had taught their ABC’s in the first grade of the Franklin Grammar School during a teaching career of 45 years, was the daughter of the late James N. and Emiline* Crumpler Bell of Southampton County. Besides her sister-in-law, she is survived by a niece, Mrs. James Henry of Franklin. Miss Alice was born in 1861 and at the age of 20 began teaching school. When she retired 45 years later, in 1926, at the age of 65, local citizens, including many of her former pupils, presented her with a beautiful silver loving cup and $25 in gold. On the cup if the following inscription: "Presented to Miss Alice Bell by the people of Franklin as a token of their love and appreciation of her 45 years of faithful service as teacher." Among the many of Miss Alice’s pupils who later distinguished themselves in life is Governor Colgate W. Darden, Jr. Miss Alice was a faithful member of High Street Methodist Church, and taught a class of children in the Sunday School until a few years ago, maintaining her deep interest in and love for children, which was unfailingly reciprocated. She was the oldest member of the church at the time of her death. Services were conducted from the home of Mrs. Bell on Sunday afternoon, December 20, at 3 o’clock, by the Rev. Harry W. Backhus, III, of High St. Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Franklin Baptist Church. Rev. Mr. Backhus read Tennyson’s "Crossing the Bar." A brief service was held at the grave in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were Edward Gilliam, Edgar Jackson, Willie Weede, Henry F. Fitzgerald, J.J. Pace, C.C. Vaughan, III, John C. Parker, Jr., and Geo. H. Parker.
