GERTRUDE HODGES BEALE

   Mrs. Gertrude Hodges Beale, age 63, died Friday afternoon, October 26, 
after a few hours illness, climaxing several years of ill health.

   Mrs. Beale was the wife of the late William Fletcher Beale of Franklin and 
the daughter of the late Henry Harrison and Mrs. Cornelia Hodges, prominent 
people of Nansemond County. She was a consistent communicant of the Franklin 
Christian Church.

   Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. Jerome Kilmartin of Bedford, Indiana, 
Miss Virginia Beale, who teacher in Danville; one son, Wesley Beale of 
Franklin; one grandchild, Mary Maddox Beale of Franklin; three sisters, Mrs. 
J.R. Weir of Baltimore, Mrs. G.B. White of Norfolk and Miss Mollie Hodges of 
Franklin and two brothers, J.W. Hodges of Roanoke and Roy Hodges of Holland.

   Funeral services were held from her late residence in South High Street 
Sunday afternoon conducted by her pastor, Dr. Elwood W. Jones, assisted by 
Rev. R.D Stephenson. Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery.

   Active pallbearers were: James I. Beale, Jr., Roger I. Beale, J.H. Boyd, 
Lloyd A. Darden, J.A. Williams. W.H. Jones, W.H. Norfleet and Dr. A.P. Cutchin.

   The choir of the Christian Church sang "Abide with Me" and the casket was 
covered with a pall of white chrysanthemums and gypsophila.
