All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ HATTIE EUNICE BELL MISS HATTIE BELL, DECORATED NURSE OF WORLD WAR I COURTLAND - Miss Hattie Eunice Bell, 74, retired registered nurse of World War I, died Friday in a Richmond hospital. A native of Southampton County, she lived in Richmond several years. Her parents were William Dickerson and Mrs. Elizabeth Briggs Bell. The recipient of three combat citations during World War I, she was stationed in Toul, France, at U.S. Base Hospital, which was known as McGuire Unit for its commander, Cmdr. Stuart McGuire of the Medical Corps. She was a member of Pace Memorial Methodist Church, Richmond. Surviving are five sisters, Mrs. Minnie B. Seal, Miss Mary Sue Bell and Mrs. Elizabeth Bell of Richmond, Miss Pauline Bell of Talihina, Okla., and Mrs. Fannie Grizzard of Courtland; a niece, Mrs. Katherine Bell Martin of Long Island, N.Y.; a nephews, William A. Bell, Jr. of Courtland. Funeral services were held Sunday at 4 p.m. in Courtland Methodist Church by the Rev. Bryon S. Halstead. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland. Pallbearers were George Fannon, Fred Caffin, Linwood Tatum, Ray Clark, Reginald Williams, Burton J. McLemore, George H. Parker, Jr., and Paige Watkinson.
