All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JAMES CHESLEY BEALE JAMES CHESLEY BEALE, PROMINENT BUSINESS MAN, DIES SUDDENLY James Chesley Beale of this town died suddenly Sunday evening in the Doctors’ Hospital, Washington, of a heart attack where he was a patient for a minor operation. Mr. Beale had been attending the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia, stopping over in Washington while en route home. Mr. Beale was a well-known and successful business man, being a member of the Franklin Peanut Company almost since its inception here in the early 1900’s and had extensive business interests’ in Franklin and elsewhere. He was the son of the late James Irvin and Mrs. Lillie L. Beale of this town, spending his life in Franklin. He was an alumnus of Randolph-Macon College and a member of the Kappa Alpha college fraternity. On December 10, 1914, he married Miss Alice Lewis of Fargo, North Dakota, who survives him with six children, James Chesley, Jr., Robert Irvin, Cyrus Lewis and Warren Beale, and Misses Nancy and Alice Beale, all of this town; by three brothers, Roger I. and James Irvin Beale of Franklin, and Cyrus W. Beale of Richmond; by two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Beale Lewis of Fargo, North Dakota, and Mrs. Liluer Beale Nixon of Brazil, and a large family connection. At the time of his death Mrs. Beale and four of the children were visiting Mrs. Beale’s people in Fargo, and returned to Franklin by plane. Mr. Beale was a member of the Franklin congregational Christian Church, funeral rites being conducted from his home in South High Street Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock by his pastor, Dr. Elwood W. Jones, assisted by the Rev. B.B. Bland of High Street Methodist Church. The pallbearers were: George H. Parker, J.H. Boyd, E.P. Jones, Ernest L. Beale, W.J. Cross, Jr., H.L. Westbrook, Cecil Vaughan, 3rd, and J.C. Bristow of Richmond. Burial was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Members of the Men’s Bible Class of the Congregational Christian Church were honorary bearers and the Girl Scouts, in which Mr. Beale’s two daughters are interested and useful members, attended the services in a body.
