Mr. Bell was fifty-four years of age and although he had been in poor health for several months his death was quite a shock to his many friends here. He was the son of the late James Nicholas Bell, Sr., and Mrs. Emmeline Crumpler Bell of this county. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Corinne Forehand of Holley’s Wharf, Chowan County, N.C., the daughter of the late John Martin Forehand, a prominent farmer and business man of Eastern North Carolina, Mr. and Mrs. Bell being married in November, 1902, and by one daughter, Alma Bell. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. G.M. Whitley and Miss Alice Bell of this town, and by a wide family connection here and in the county. Mr. Bell was a member of High Street M.E. Church and was one of the leading spirits in the R.M. Chandler Bible Class, being instrumental in its organization seven years ago during the pastorate of the late Dr. R.M. Chandler here. He was secretary of the class and had the enviable record of missing only one Sunday in seven years, this absence being due to his illness at the time. He was a merchant in our town for several years and had been connected with other business interests here. A loyal member of Franklin Lodge No. 151, A.F. & A.M., the members of that fraternity attended his funeral in a body, conducting the impressive rites of the order at the grave side. The funeral services were conducted from the residence Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock by his pastor, Rev. L.S. Flournoy, Mrs. A. Mason Cooke, Mrs. W.E. Snipes and Miss Kathryn Vaughan, J. Edgar Weede and E.P. Jones singing "Jesus Lover of My Soul". Interment was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the pallbearers being: active, J.F. Bryant, Jr., Claude J. Edwards, J.O.
