Surviving are a daughter Miss Lillian Overton Beale of Suffolk, one son, William E. Beale of Handsom; one brother, Joseph Z. Johnson of Hanover; and a number of nephews and nieces, among the latter two nieces of Mr. Beale who were reared in the home, Mrs. Louise Jones Pendleton of Wytheville and Mrs. Martha Jones Pretlow of South Richmond. Funeral services were conducted from the home on Monday afternoon, January 3, at 2:30 o'clock by Rev. John A. Winslow, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Suffolk. Interment was in the family cemetery near the home. Pallbearers were Roswell Hart, Walter Bishop, Frank Walton, J.Z. Johnson, Col. C.F. Johnson, Bernard Johnson, Dr. R. Terrell Johnson and R.S. Tatem. The casket was covered with a pall of red rosebuds, madonna lilies, white carnations and ferns. There were many other beautiful pieces which with the large crowd of relatives and friends that gathered for the last rites, attested the esteem in which "Miss Lillian" was held by both races. She was indeed a friend of the poor and needy; as a good neighbor she gave freely of her time and her means to those in need. During the depression years of 1929 and 1930 she had charge of the distribution of Red Cross supplies in her section of the county and as long as her health permitted she assisted the County Welfare workers. She was a great lover of children and flowers and spent much time with both. She will be greatly missed in the community in which she spent such a large part of her life. "We cannot think of her as dead, Who walks with us no more. Along the paths of life we tread, She had but gone before." Lillian (JOHNSON; Mrs. William E.)
