BELL COURTLAND - Thomas Briggs Bell, 75, retired sheriff of Southampton County was buried Sunday in Riverside Cemetery. A host of friends and County officials attended the funeral services at 3 p.m. at Courtland Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. C.W. Gibson, Jr., pastor, assisted by the Rev. Otis Gilliam, a former pastor. Pallbearers were H.B. McLemore, Jr., G.H. Parker, Jr., Tom Turner, Ryland Brooks, Otis Joyner, Paige Watkinson, William H. Bell and Fred Barker. Mr. Bell died Friday morning in a Richmond hospital after a short illness. He was the husband of Mrs. Myrtle Gardner Bell and a son of William D. and Mrs. Elizabeth Briggs Bell of Southampton County. He was a steward of Courtland Methodist Church and member of the Methodist Men’s Club. He also was past master of Courtland Masonic Lodge 85; past president of Veterans of World War I USA Barracks 1162, Southampton; and a member of Courtland Ruritan Club. He became deputy sheriff of Southampton County in 1921 and sheriff in March 1926. He served the county 38 years. Besides his widow, surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Katherine Martin of Huntington, N.Y.; six sisters, Mrs. Fannie Grizzard of Courtland; Misses Mary Bell, Eunice Bell, Elizabeth Bell, and Mrs. Minnie Seal of Richmond; and Miss Pauline Bell of Talihina, Okla.; and two grandchildren of Huntington, N.Y.
