BELL DIES OF HEART ATTACK Funeral services for William Augustus Bell, 56, of Courtland were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock in the Courtland Methodist Church, with the pastor, Rev. C.A. McCormick, Jr., and Rev. L.M. Kanipe, pastor the Courtland Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, the active pallbearers being R.H. Brooks, L.A. Clements, T.P. Gilbert, H.B. McLemore, Jr., G. Hinson Parker, Jr., Elmo Pittman, Frank Tymosko and H. Paige Watkinson. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Men’s Bible Class of the Courtland Methodist Church. Mr. Bell, Deputy Sheriff of Southampton County for the past quarter- century, died suddenly about 10:45 o’clock Monday night on a farm near Drewryville, where he had gone to make an arrest. He had not been in the best of health for some time, and carried with him for emergency use a bottle of nitro-glycerine tablets. Feeling ill, he attempted to talk over the car radio with the Sheriff’s office in Courtland, which was closed for the night. The Sherriff’s office in Emporia, however, caught his plea for assistance and within a [...*] arrived on the scene. Edwards found Mr. Bell lying on the ground some 30 feet from his car, with his gun still in its holster. Beside his body was the bottle of tablets, indicating that Mr. Bell had tried to obtain relief from his suffering. There was no evidence of foul play, according to Sheriff T.B. Bell, Deputy Sheriff Paige Watkinson and State Trooper J.B. Barksdale, who conducted an investigation. The deceased was born near [...*] county, a son of the late William Dickerson and Elizabeth Briggs Bell. He was the husband of Mrs. Edith Beale Bell, who survives him. Mr. Bell was twice Grand Chancellor of Franklin Lodge No. 51, Knights of Pythias, and was a member of the Courtland Methodist Church and the Courtland Ruritan Club. In addition to his wife he is arrived by one son, William A. Bell, Jr.; one brother, Sheriff Thomas Briggs Bell of Courtland; six sisters, Mrs. Minnie Seal and Misses Eunice and Mary Bell of Richmond, Mrs. Fannie Grizzard of Courtland, Miss Elizabeth Bell of Coeburn, and Miss Pauline Bell of Fort Defiance, Ariz.; and an uncle, Thomas Bell of Wakefield.
